He should have seen it coming. For weeks, she had been hinting at a change. She kept talking of “moving on” and “breaking old ties”. He had always imagined she said it in reference to something else, but this…this was unexpected. Especially since they had been inseparable for years now, best buddies; confidantes with no secrets between them. A break-up between them seemed to be the last possible thing.
“Are you sure?!” he could still not believe it. “Will you really be able to get along?”
“Yes. I know this is what I want to do.” She replied. “I just cannot go on like this anymore. The expectations are too high, and we are rarely ever happy, even though we spend almost all our waking hours together.”
She could sense the skeptical look on his face, even across the chat window where she was currently chatting with him.
“You have been with him for 10 years now. Do you really think it is wise to let go so suddenly? What will you do when you need late night advice, when you feel the urge to rant, or when you just want to talk?”
“Don’t worry. I have given this a great deal of thought. It’s not a spur-of-the-moment decision. It’s time we gave each other some space. ”
Saying so, she signed out of her Facebook chat. A couple of minutes later her Facebook Profile picture changed to a plain white background that said, “This account is no longer accessed. Please see my wall for contact details. See you in the real world!”
– Social networks are like our second selves; at times they even end up defining our primary selves. It is time we learn to break up with them and learn to live in the real world.
