The importance of reading cannot be stressed enough. With the easy availability of reading material thanks to the Internet and digital boom, reading is no longer the privilege of a select few. But in spite of the easy access to good quality material, reading as a habit is on the decline.
Teachers play a huge role in reinforcing the habit of reading among children. Recognizing the need to sensitize teachers towards the role of reading in education, Delhi Public School Bangalore South in association with Tell-A-Tale, organized a Workshop for teachers on the “Importance of Reading”. The workshop objective was to motivate teachers to read, help them understand techniques to spread the need for reading among students, discuss reading of newspapers and their benefits, and to understand the contribution of reading towards professional growth. The session was conducted by Poornima Shekhar, an academician and teacher with four decades of experience in working with students and teachers at all levels.
The workshop began with an activity to test active reading skills. This was a practical session aimed to explain the need for focused reading. The session then moved on to a study of the techniques of reading, followed by structured reading. By laying emphasis on critical thinking, the moderator discussed a variety of techniques on using newspapers in the classroom, and also ways of customizing these techniques for each subject and every audience.
Different people – children as well as adults, are attracted to different kinds of stories. The participants actively brainstormed to discuss and share thoughts/ideas to ably identify the right book for every child. She emphasized the idea of using textbooks and storybooks as a tool to improve students’ vocabulary.
Teachers were also exposed to simple techniques of designing activities for assessments (FA). The session concluded with a discussion on the various ways reading influences a person’s career, the exposure it provides and its contribution to professional growth.
The session was short yet replete with content to absorb and implement. We thank Ms. Geetha Sridhar, Librarian, DPS SOUTH, for being instrumental in organizing the workshop.
